How To Lose Subscribers

Give your subscribers value

This is a weird headline, I know. By learning how not do something you can understand how to do something. They say in internet marketing, the money is in the list. To take that a step further, I believe that the money is in the relationship with the list.

Many marketers, including some of the gurus, are ‘walking on the edge’ when it comes to their list. They have built a list of thousands of subscribers. They have done a good job of this. What they are struggling with is building a relationship with their list. Personally, I have unsubscribed from 90% of the email lists that I was on.

Why? Because I was sick of getting pitched to without my best interests at heart. Many marketers have built their entire business model around following product launches and bombard the subscribers with offers to buy products. Any marketer or website owner needs to strike a balance between selling and content.

The standard of the content that is expected now on the internet is much better than what it was 5 years ago. Marketers that are bombarding their list with offers are losing subscribers at an unprecedented rate. So how do you keep a good relationship with your list?

My thoughts on this are that the person should be better off after they opened your email than what they were before. This means that the person should have learnt something as a result of your email or be more motivated to take action and improve in an area of their life or business.

This does not mean that you can’t sell to your list. A good rule of thumb is that you wouldn’t promote something that you wouldn’t use or recommend yourself. Personally using and recommending a product is a great testimonial as your subscribers know that you are putting your own time and money into a product and recommending it.
